Campground Review: Idle Hour Lake Campground

Idle Hour Lake Campground is probably not a campground we would have come across on our own. However, when we scheduled to have some truck maintenance done nearby, this campground was suggested as a place to park for a few days. Idle Hour Lake Campground is a city park located along the Idle Hour Lake in Altamont, KS. It is an incredible bargain, providing full hook-up sites including free wifi all for $10/night! Other amenities are few, but the lake is nearby and there is also an 18 hole disc golf course onsite.

The Idle Hour Lake Campground has two sections - the North Loop with nine pull-thru sites with an average length of 78 feet and the South Loop which has a few really long sites, but also some shorter back-in sites. All the sites are gravel and level. The campground is extremely rural with not much around. Don’t plan to stay at this campground and run out to the grocery store or out for breakfast.

Another unique thing about this campground is that fees are collected by a police officer on the night of your arrival. Since the park is run by the city, there is no one to check in with upon your arrival. You receive your site number when you make the reservation and they make certain to have the electric box / water spigot unlocked and ready for your stay. We received excellent service from both the person taking our reservation and with the police officer who came and collected our money.

While the Idle Hour Lake Campground may not have received a high star rating on our usual Campground Review sheet, it is an excellent value for the price if you find yourself needing to be in rural Southeast Kansas.
