Nom Nom, Potatopia!
Thanks to Facebook, we found out about the grand opening of a new restaurant super close to where we are staying in Sunrise, FL. The word ‘potato’ drew me in and the word ‘free’ sealed the deal. Potatopia was offering a FREE meal with the purchase of any drink. After a quick glance at their menu and spotting those three special words - “gluten free options”, the event was added to our agenda for the day. We arrived shortly after they opened and the line was already well out the door. As we saw people dressed up in work clothes and scrubs, we were thankful that we had the time to wait as long as necessary without needing to rush back to work. Reason #7832 why we love our full-time RV life!
In my opinion, Potatopia is like a Chipotle for potatoes. They already have four locations with a pair each in New York and New Jersey. This location was their first outside of the Northeast corridor, opening up shop just outside of Fort Lauderdale. Both their graphics are design are modern and sleek. The menu has 5 steps: Potato, Meat, Topppings, Cheese, & Sauce. Essentially you start with your favorite potato preparation (smashed, baked, mashed, fried, sweet, tots, etc) and then have them smoother it anyway you request. If you find the create-your-own a little too stressful, never fear they have “smash hits” and “slim hits” already designed for you. Here you will find combinations like
- Smash-topia: smashed red skins, oven roasted chicken, scallions, red onions, fresh garlic, cilantro, sharp cheddar cheese, asiago/parmesan blend with roasted red pepper aioli
- I Think Therefore I Yam: sweet potato crinkle fries, oven roasted chicken, red onions, fresh garlic, assuage/parmesan blend with garlic aioli
- Veggie Heavy: full idaho potato, broccoli, roasted corn, cilantro, fresh garlic, roasted jalapeños, red onions, scallions, sour cream with roasted pepper aioli
- Bacon Overload: shoestring fries, double smokehouse bacon, red onions, scallions, smoked gouda with chipotle aioli
We opted for the pre-designed combinations that we knew hadalready passed the flavor test on someone else’s tastebuds! Those creators must have had good taste because both Russ and I enjoyed our potato combinations. It did appear that all ingredients were being prepared fresh off the grill or out of the oven, just as their website claims. Potatopia focuses on preparing foods in the same ways that one would cook at home. This fresh approach allows them to cater to the tastes and needs of everyone from paleo, gluten free, vegan, meat lovers, and everything in between! The normal menu prices seemed a tad high in our opinion, but the price tag of free with the purchase of our $3.71 drinks today made the price seem right!
Potatopia is a utopia for potato-lovers like myself. Thanks for the generous gesture of free food in addition to great customer service even in the midst of lines of crazed people seeking free food (us included).
